RevPi Compact

Open source IIoT gateway

The RevPi Compact open source IIoT gateway offers users maximum freedom in implementing IIoT projects due to its open platform concept, offering standard software operation or full control of the platform via root access.

RevPi Compact offers integrated hardware, containing the base computer and inputs and outputs, so it is possible to carry out different projects on one easy-to-install computer.

A specially modified Raspbian version with a real-time patch is available as your operating system. Common IIoT protocols, such as MQTT and OPC UA, are supported for transferring machine data directly to the cloud.

Individual applications can be programmed via, among other options, Node-RED, Python or directly in C. RevPi Connect’s modular design allows the basic 45mm device to be equipped with expansion modules such as digital and analog I/O, gateways with industrial communication buses (fieldbus, gateways, etc.) and radio modules such as Bluetooth. The expansion modules can be connected – plug and play – to the base module via a socket positioned on the top and can be easily configured using a tool with a graphical user interface.

2 Networks – 1 Device

2 Redes – 1 Dispositivo

Two Ethernet ports allow the device to be integrated simultaneously into the automation network and the IT network to transmit machinery data, for example from the factory to the cloud or to a higher IT system.

Real industrial suitability

One of our main objectives was to give the Raspberry Pi real industrial capability to turn it into a true IIoT gateway. For this reason, the RevPi Compact’s top rail housing is equipped with robust 24V industrial hardware that meets the EN61131-2 standard.

  • Power supply: min. 10.7V, max. 28,8V
  • Operating temperature: -40 to 55 ° C
  • ESD protection: 4kV / 8kV according to EN61131-2 and IEC 61000-6-2
  • Peak / surge tests: applied in accordance with EN61131-2 and IEC 61000-6-2 using power supply inputs, Ethernet line and I/O lines
  • EMI tests: according to EN61131-2 and IEC 61000-6-2

Open source software

Although the Revolution Pi is an open system in which everyone can install their own software, we have tried to equip it with software and applications that cover most applications. The operating system used is a customized version of Raspbian, which includes a real-time patch in the kernel. In our opinion, this is the best compromise to get as close as possible to the original development environment of a Raspberry Pi and still obtain high control over the priorities of the tasks that the scheduler manages.

The scheduler, which controls the execution of tasks by the operating system, can be extensively configured in this modified kernel so that the delays normally caused by network and other I/O access are avoided. Suitable drivers for the expansion modules are already pre-installed.

Modbus support

RevPi Compact already has “Server and Client” capabilities for the popular Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP network protocols. External gateways are therefore no longer required for these two network protocols. Modbus TCP works with the Ethernet interfaces available on the RevPi Compact, e.g. via the RJ45 sockets on the front panel, or any other Ethernet connection added, e.g. USB WLAN adapter, which provides the TCP/IP protocol. Modbus RTU can be carried out via the 4-pin RS485 connector on the front panel. Server and Client configuration is controlled via the browser-based graphical configuration software, PiCtory.
